Emotional Wellbeing (The Gidget Foundation)

The Gidget Foundation promotes awareness of perinatal anxiety and depression (previously known as post-natal depression) amongst women and their families, their health providers and the wider community to ensure that those in need receive timely, appropriate and supportive care.

Parenthood can be a special time but it also has its challenges. Crippling mood disorders affect over 50,000 women who give birth in Australia each year. In 2001, new mother ‘Gidget’ succumbed to postnatal depression. Unfortunately each year in Australia mothers lose their lives to this illness. Nearly 20% of mothers and 10% of fathers will experience anxiety and depression during pregnancy and early parenthood. These conditions can be treated and parents do recover.

The Gidget Foundation is a not for profit organization, chaired by North Shore obstetrician Dr Vijay Roach. They produce resources, and provide education and awareness programs for health professionals and the community. They offer ongoing psychological support for families experiencing emotional distress during pregnancy and early parenthood at no cost. For further information or support please contact us.
